When it comes to your business website’s Search Engine Optimization (SEO), dozens of factors affect your results such as the quality of content, website security, and mobile friendliness.
While you may have heard of some of the more technical aspects that can improve SEO (such as HTML header tags to indicate content hierarchy), there are other types of tags you can include in your website to boost SEO results. One way is to use specialized microdata called schema markups to communicate content to the search engines that crawl your site.
What is Schema Markup?
Schema markup tags are used in the code of your website and won’t be seen by your regular website visitors. Instead, it’s seen by the search engine bots that crawl your website. These microdata tags are part of a special vocabulary that offers further clarification of what your content means to search engines. Here’s a good description of what this means from the www.schema.org, the main dictionary for this special vocabulary:
“By adding additional tags to the HTML of your web pages—tags that say, ‘Hey search engine, this information describes this specific movie, or place, or person, or video’—you can help search engines and other applications better understand your content and display it in a useful, relevant way.”*
How does it improve SEO?
By adding this specially structured microdata to your website, you improve the chances of your website content appearing as a “rich snippet” in search engine results pages. A rich snippet is a search result that includes more than just the standard title tag and meta description, but can also include a photo, reviews, pricing, and other valuable information. Rich snippets are more enticing for users and increase the chance of engagement with your website.
